Visual Weight
Photo taken September 28, 2008. Behind the house on the corner of Franklin and Mark Streets in Winona, MN.
This photo shows even weight between the white of the garage, the shadow, the larger plant, and the plants on the bottom of the photo.
Perspective and Depth
Photo taken September 28, 2008. Train tracks off Franklin and Mark Streets in Winona, MN.
Example of diminishing perspective. The subject closest to the lens is larger than the subjects furthest away.
Pattern
Photo taken September 28, 2008. WSU Theatre Tech Shop.
This photo is an example of a regular pattern. The cords all have a similar shape.
Rhythm
Photo taken September 26, 2008. WSU Dance Studio (Memorial 300). Subjects are Megan Thompson (right) and Jen Stone (left).
This is an example of rhythm in a photo. The viewer will need a little extra time to follow the shape of the dancers and the repeated shape of their bodies.
Figure and Ground
Photo taken September 28, 2008. WSU Mainstage- set of 13 Clocks. Subject is Ryan Hawkins.
This photo is an example of figure and ground. The viewer might have a hard time deciding what the subject is. It could be the man, but it could be the set.
Dynamic Tension
Photo taken September 26, 2008. WSU Kryzsko Commons.
The angles, diagonals, and curves lead the eyes in different directions, into and out of the photo.
Balance
Photo taken September 28, 2008. At Veteran’s Memorial Park.
The photo is very symmetrical, therefore it is an example of static balance.
Gestalt
Photo taken September 28, 2008. Mugby Junction. Subject is Mugby employee, Tierney.
This is an example of the whole being greater than the sum of all it’s parts. If it was just the barista, the photo might not be too effective. The same if it was just the coffee maker. The two need to be together for the photo to tell the story.
Contrast
Photo taken September 28, 2008. WSU Performing Arts Center.
This is an example of contrast between hard and soft subjects.
